GACS 3, Providence 0 Spartan sweep GAC soccer teams down Providence By David Friedlander - Staff Writer NORCROSS - Greater Atlanta Christian's boys and girls soccer teams took different paths to victory in their Area 11-AA/A doubleheader with Providence Christian on Thursday at the Spartan Soccer Sports Complex.............. Meanwhile, the boys had to bide their time against a solid Providence defense before finally striking late in each half, including two goals exactly 3 minutes apart in the waning moments to break away for a 3-0 win in a rematch of last year's Class AA/A state championship. The sweep proved to be a big boost to each GAC team in its respective region race. The top-ranked Spartan boys (11-1, 5-0) gained a two-game cushion over No. 11 Providence (3-5-1, 2-2), Wesleyan and Buford atop the region standings. "We're not completely happy with the way we played," GAC coach Thom Jacquet said. "But this puts us in good position. This is the position we wanted to be in." It took a little patience for the Spartans to put themselves in their desired position in the standings thanks to a stout defensive effort by Providence most of the first half. But GAC finally broke through with 5:17 left in the opening frame on Aldyn Royes' unassisted goal that gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead heading into intermission. They then had to hold off a Providence team that gave itself several opportunities to tie the game in the second half. The Stars' best chance came in the 61st minute, when Richard Shewsbury slid a through ball to Garrett Stryszko, who sprinted through the GAC defense and let loose with a shot from inside the penalty area that went just wide of the near post. Having dodged that bullet, the Spartans were finally able to put the game away late. First, an innocent looking shot from Zack Johnson from about 25 yards out slipped through Providence goalkeeper Zach Gray and gave GAC a 2-0 lead with 8:06 to play. Exactly 3 minutes later at the 5:06 mark, Chris Thomas - who a few near misses throughout the game - finished off Peter Lobona's cross from the left wing to extend the lead to 3-0 and seal the win for the Spartans.........
